We've had a rhubarb patch here at the farm for decades. It's a low maintenance plant that comes back year after year with little care. It's also one of the first edibles to come from the garden each spring. Rhubarb is quite tart, and is best known for use in pies and jams, but we enjoy it in savory dishes as well, it makes a wonderfully unique chicken dish!
Rhubarb prefers full sun but will grow in light shade as well. Soil must have good drainage, rhubarb will not tolerate wet soils and will develop root rot. We typically cover the bed with manure compost in the fall after the plant dies back, as rhubarb likes lots of organic fertilizer. To harvest, grab the stalk near the base and pull, it is best not to cut. Be sure to cut and compost the leaves when harvesting as they are poisonous.
You will receive a potted plant, please note this is for LOCAL PICKUP ONLY. We are not shipping live plants at this time so all must be picked up in person at the farm. Plants will be potted up once you purchase. We will email you as soon as your plant is ready to set up a pickup appointment. Feel free to include a note with your order if there is a time that works best for you.
