A fascinating book on economics and business from the early 1800's. The Book of Commerce by Sea and Land, Exhibiting its Connection with Agriculture, the Arts, and Manufactures, to which are added A Host of Commerce and a Chronological Table by Uriah Hunt. Originally published in 1836, this is a hardcover 1850 edition, published by Uriah Hunt & Son of Philadelphia. 185 pages including index. Black and white engraved illustrations are scattered throughout. Covers common trade items like food, spices, alcohol, metals, wood, cloth, fur, feathers, perfume, and other products. It also touches on whaling, different ships, history of commerce, tariffs and customs, and infrastructure like docks, wharves, banks and more.
Antique estate find, please see photos for more information. This book is 175 years old but is in remarkably good condition for its age. Spine is discolored but intact. Corners are worn and back cover has some water stains. Pages show foxing but are not yellow or brittle. Binding is intact. Original owner inscribed the inside cover with his name, Erie Penna, and the date May 24, 1850. Found just a few miles from the city of Erie, this copy has probably been in northwesterm Pennsylvania for nearly 200 years! Fascinating to read if handled with care.
