A rare and unusual book- Suggested Rules for Recovering Coal Mines After Explosions and Fires by W. E. Garforth, copyright 1910and published by The Colliery Guardian Co. Limited of London and D. Van Nostrand Co. of New York. Covers suggestions for improving mine safety before an accident, as well as steps to take after a fire or explosion takes place, including sending rescue teams and dealing with humans and equines that may be hurt or killed. A serious book for a serious subject, it includes several fold out diagrams of an actual explosion from 1886 as an example of many of the principles. 71 pages plus fold outs. Also includes a 1911 pamphlet from the Bituminous Mining Law of Pennsylvania, also covering safety.
Antique auction find, please see photos for more information on condition. In good condition. Spine is in delicate condition as shown but binding is intact. Cover also has wear to the cover edges, and pencil notations can be found on various pages, this was likely a working copy for a small Western Pennsylvania coal mine. Fold out diagrams are in very good condition and pages are not brittle or yellow. An interesting look at miner's safety (or lack thereof) going back over 100 years ago.
