Written in 1878, Sensible Etiquette of the Best Society: Customs, Manners, Morals and Home Culture, complied from the best authorities by Mrs. H. O. Ward. Published in Philadelphia by Porter & Coates, this copy is the eighteenth revised edition. 567 pages including appendix.

This is a fascinating look at American culture and society from the late 1800s, covering everyday things like proper dress, writing letters, meals, education and more. It also contains information on how to present yourself at balls and parties, marriage, and mourning. It also covers pitfalls like "scandal mongers", "lo-bred women", conflicting authorities, and other assorted scandalous behavior to avoid.

In very good condition for age, but please review photos. Only minor wear to cover, primarily at corners and spine. Gilding is in nice shape on the cover, spine, and page edges. Pages remain white and are not brittle. Binding is in good shape with no cracks or loose pages noted. Has original, sewn-in green ribbon bookmark. A beautiful book at nearly 150 years old, and a fascinating sociological study of American culture and values of the time.
