Vintage cast iron deep skillet or chicken fryer in the "ugly hammered" style, maker unknown. Because the maker is unknown, the exact age is as well, but it is generally believed that ugly hammered pieces date from the 1930s-1940s. The bottom of the skillet is completely unmarked, there is an 8 on the top side of both the handle and the lid. The lid has ridges on the underside to make it self-basting but they are not as defined as the casting of other brands. Measures 10" across, 14.25" with handle, and 3" deep. This is a heavy piece that will hold heat well, the skillet alone weighs 7.5 lbs, 12.5 lbs with lid.
Vintage estate find, please review all photos. The skillet has an imperfection on the rim as shown. I have examined it carefully and am not sure if it was chipped years ago or if it is simply a casting flaw, or possibly a slip by the foundry worker who was grinding off the tab where the molds fit together. There are no sharp edges and it doesn't extend past the factory grinding. It is covered completely by the rim of the skillet and should not affect cooking. Skillet has some light rust pitting on cooking surface but would still make a wonderful fryer. Sits flat. Professionally restored via electrolysis and given multiple coats of grapeseed oil seasoning. Ready for use or display!
